Thru-hiking cheap

Thru-hiking cheap

Let's face it-take a couple of months off to hike the Appalachian Trail can be an expensive. Your journey with a life can cost thousands of dollars, so here are some of the most effective ways I found to ease the financial bite. Some of these require some 'planning and discipline, but the reward is worth it.

BeforeLeave

Take the little things: Before you leave, to split the march into three piles – Essential (sleeping bag, toothbrush), you may want (camp chairs, extra towels), and nice to have (radio, cup of espresso). Rid of the last two batteries, you'll never miss it. Less gear means less to buy, less to carry, less to stay dry, and less recovery.

You have your personal equipment. There is a wealth of information on the achievement of stoves, backpacks, clothing and other gear. You can easily add an alcohol stove for about ten minutes of material in a recycling bin. Home The Wings thru store bakery (material and models) and hiker.com Homemade Gear Forum in Backpacking.net are all great places to start.

Buy only the tools you need. Every year thousands of pounds of equipment in the home of Mount Crossing shipped to Neel's GapAfter you use a matter of days. Money used to buy tools and postage to send home, could be spent in many ways better.

Get the number of days before the walk-thru available. This may be a reason that you wear, so you can avoid buying replacement equipment in the field.

Do not start too early. The traditional days for a thru-hike is north of 1 April. Run around the same time, typically have temperatures much better than your fellow hikers who had started a month earlier. All residences will be open, and I can not tempted to stay in the city because of improved weather conditions.

Buy "rechargeable phone cards at home instead of convenience stores in the area. Using a phone from a pay phone eats minutes at an alarming rate, use a normal landline phone if possible.

Send to a maildropsplaces you plan to stay instead at the post office. If you come into town on a Saturday afternoon, you or your store mail drop or wait in town until next Monday to pick up your supplies.

Consider buying a Pocket Mail e-mail device. We have one used during our Mississippi River Expedition with excellent results. You can send and receive mail from any phone, which eliminates the need to pursue(and sometimes paid) access to the Internet.

Cut all unnecessary spending and impulse buying. Cable TV, magazines, coffee, chocolate bars, and other minor expenses add so easily.

Look around. REI-OUTLET.com SierraTradingPost.comand often forced to buy the gear in big discount.

While he was out in the field

Reduce the amount of time spent in the city. And 'the only way to save money on yourtravel. Do not plan to spend the money, when in fact the track, but when you go to town, your money flies away. Eating out, motels, laundry, postage and other expenses add up quickly. A good strategy is to camp near the city last night, on foot or buckle in the city tomorrow, run the card, then leave in the afternoon to a camp nearby. No matter how far you are from the city, only to quitcity.

Minimize or eliminate smoking, alcohol and soft drinks. These non-essential can easily add up to a few hundred dollars in six months.

Make a list before going into town for your visit and gifts to buy.

Make your comfortable camping. It is much easier to beat in a motel room, if you have outside of a good night's sleep. If you have something more to make camping more comfortable, it takes (withinreason.) in the other five grams for the other a mattress or hammock can pay big dividends for maximum comfort.

Eating in Al-U-Can-Eat buffet at all possible.

Get Cash Back at shops and post offices in order to avoid ATM fees.

Buy in grocery stores instead of convenience stores, where possible.

Delete the city will face in the production of a day or two of food. This can also allow you to move in a more moderate pacebecause they spend their time on the road rather than in town.

Use the tools children so they can carry more food.

Jobs for stay at the hostel.

Dividing the cost of motel rooms and other accommodation with other hikers.

Visit Hiker boxes before going to the store for supplies.

Take off days on the trail rather than in town. Take an extra day for deliveries and enjoy resting on a large site. You can do laundry, wash, andsleep the day away for free. Remember that many people, like the view they have, instead, set in the house.
